my kerry blue won 2 championships in co. Kerry Ireland, where they originated from. Why is it that so many people old and yound have never heard of them there, but in this country they know where they come from by just looking at him when we are walking him ? we live in the UK and I was born in Co. Kery Ireland also. yes I never heard of them when I grew up also. People that have heard of them seem to think they have a vicious streak but our kerry is so so placid! i know they are not popular as took us 3 years to find a breeder! oh please dont say you couldnt handle one as they are they are the most loyal and loving dogs to their owner!
Answer:While the breed originated in Ireland, England is still where they are most popular. I have only seen a handful in the US, they are just not that popular here either. Many people believe all terriers have mean tendencies. Most terriers WILL bite, and people think that is wrong. But terriers were bred to be fearless, territorial, and they were always encouraged to bark and bite. They were the first defense at many farms. They were supposed to keep all vermin(man and animal) off the farm. And terriers are over achievers!! It would be nice if more people understood their good points, but since most people would never be able to handle a terrier of that size(or any size), their lack of popularity is probably a very good thing. I know people who can't handle their 5 lb Yorkie, I can't imagine them with the much larger Kerry Blue! A very small terrier is too much dog for most people. Love your little dog, and give yourself a pat on the back for finding a breed that you love, even if it was not so well known! Oh, and an extra pat for having the fortitude to handle this breed, because whether you realize it or not, these guys need a special owner! I, for one, admire the breed, but could never handle one!
