Puppy Dog Breed Lakeland Terrier

Latest Lakeland Terrier Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Welsh Terrier or Lakeland Terrier? I have been doing research on both of these dogs and cant choose?
Which is a better dog for me. I want a dog that is lively but not too lively. I live in an apartment and in the city. For those who one or the other which is the better dog for me. I am leaning towards the welsh terrier but I do like the lakeland though.
Answer:i would throw another in the mix, get a border terrier, they have slightly more attitude than the other 2 but are such nice little dogs easy to maintain small has enough energy to play or will sit in your lap and watch the world go by. but out of your 2 choices would probably go for the welsh terrier it has a slightly lower energy level than a lakeland which is a proper working breed but the choice is yours have fun looking at puppies

  • Is a Lakeland Terrier a good first pet?
I have never owned a dog or any pet before but I think we need a new addition to our family and the timing is right - we will have enough time and resources to care for a puppy. I'm hoping to get some advice and tips on buying a new puppy (from a breeder) and I especially wanted to hear what you guys think about Lakeland Terriers. Some background on my lifestyle - I live in a house with a good-sized backyard, unfortunately our neighbors own 2 annoying cats who venture into our yard frequently, I run daily and live 2 blocks from a park, and with 3 adults in the house the dog wouldn't be alone in the house more than 5-6 hours a day. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me - I need as much as I can get!
Answer:1. Lakeland terriers require some pretty serious grooming. They either need to be clipped dog every 6-8 weeks to prevent matting, or they need to have their coats stripped out by a professional who is good with terrier coats 2-3 times per year. Because stripping is time consuming and expensive, your yearly bills will be roughly the same no matter what. But you should realize you'll be shelling out somewhere between $300-$600 a year in grooming bills, possibly more depending on your area. 2. Terriers chase cats. And anything else small and furry. 3. A Lakeland will not have the stamina to take long runs with you, so if you're looking for a jogging partner, this is not the ideal breed. Overall, I think a Lakeland is a rather challenging choice for a first dog. Terriers can be hyper and difficult to train, and most new dog owners don't fully realize how much grooming this type of dog requires, but professionally, and in the form of daily brushing and weekly nail trims. If you're up for the challenge, Lakelands are beautiful, sweet dogs with adorable personalities. If you're not certain, you might want to consider researching a breed that's a little more trainable, a little less prey-driven (the neighbors cats might appreciate it), and a little easier to groom. Hey Tyke, you illiterate twit: I've been a groomer for 5 years, hence the reference to stripping, and would you like to know the percentage of pet-quality terrier owners who have their dogs stripped instead of clipped? 1%. I can't be held responsible for people who don't want to take the time and money to make a terrier look right. But thanks for pretending to be smarter than me, as usual, you failed miserably. And learn how to type, will you? You're an embarrassment.

  • What would a cross between a lakeland terrier and a yorkshire terrier look like?
I am getting a puppy soon, and saw an ad for a lakeland and yorkie cross, and I was just wondering if anyone knows what it would look like? Large dogs are a big big nono for me as I live in an apartment, so I would like to know the size too.
Answer:well i hope those puppies were an accidental mix. i couldnt find a pic of that mix but i did find lovely pics of the breeds individually. (i cant imagine WHY anyone would want to breed these two dogs together!) lakeland terrier- http://image.wetpaint.com/wiki/Lakeland+Terrier/image/36xqvbQPMQhK$VV8wO+$Jiw==52427/GW135H135 yorkshire terrier- http://www.5stardog.com/gallery/images/Yorkshire%20Terrier/796612347594.JPG to be honest....why not check out your local SPCA or animal shelter? they have small dogs, adult dogs....so you dont have to worry about it taking so long to potty train. some dogs that are in the SPCA are fostered in ppls homes. that's what i do! we potty train the dog, socilaize the dog, and get an idea of it's personality and what family the dog would be best suited for. plus when you get a dog at the SPCA or animal shelther they have already had all their shots, and will be spayed or neutered. One of my dogs, a chihuahua Dachshund cross (Peggy Sue) i adopted from my local Kill-shelter....i saved her life and got a fantastic dog. AND when she was sent to the vet for a spay they Xrayed her and sure enough, she was already spayed. i only had to pay the cost of her shots to adopt her...a whopping 4 bucks!! she's a sweetheart too, everyone tells me they want to take her home w/them. go check out your local shelter...you might be surprised how many great little dogs you can find there. ppl throw away GREAT dogs all the time...it's a shame. wow a thumbs down for suggesting you save a homeless dogs life! and Glow...you're just as bad. i dont think i've ever seen anyone with their lips so firmly planted on someone elses butt in my life!

  • Have a 7 month old lakeland terrier b*tch and problem is she barks at nothing alot and is also very hyper?
Is there anything i can give her too calm her down a bit till the time comes when i can neuter her? Thanks
Answer:Lots of exercise and mental stimulation. A tired dog is a good dog. Does she fetch? Love her walks? Playdates with dogs you trust are good as well for getting that extra energy out. Are you in training? If you are, practicing your "homework" every day will help work her mind. (Teaching her the new tricks each week.) I play "find it" with my young dog to keep her occupied. I tie her down while she watches me hide treats (natural balance and biscuits) throughout the house, then I take her off and say "find it". It's fun for her and for me. I love watching her race from room to room trying to find the treats or kibble that I've left laying around. She has a great time as well. She's getting mental and physical exercise this way. I do this after her evening 45 minute walk to burn a little of the extra energy. During the walk, I work her mind as well - we practice our sits, stays, downs, hi-fives, shakes, everything we're supposed to learn for our training class the following weekend. Kongs stuffed with food that she has to work out, buster cubes...these are great tools as well! There are some great resources on the web on activities to keep the mind going. Good luck and have fun with it!

  • What is the difference between a Welsh and a Lakeland Terrier in regards to temperment and size?

Answer:The Welsh is a little bigger than the Lakeland, and in my experience they are more laid back and easygoing than the Lakelands. They both are fairly high energy, but they are both very sweet. They can be the same color, but many Lakelands do not have the black saddle than the Welsh usually have.
