Latest Lhasa Apso Frequently Asked Questions:
I am getting a lhasa apso soon, well 8th of May. They have lots of hair so i was wondering if anoyone could tell me how often you wash their hair and get the hair cut. Thank you
Answer:First off like I tell my clients why get a long coated breed just to end up cutting the coat off this never made sense to me. The coat makes the breed so why cut it. This breed dose not get clipped but people do it any way because there is no set cut for this breed clipping will determine how fast your dogs coat grows. It could be every 6-10 weeks. As far as bathing every 2 weeks is fine if you are using a good soap free shampoo. Next I recommend if you wish for your dog to be clipped have a groomer do this no offense but I can always tell the self groom dogs sadly they don't look to good. Yes they have allot of hair that's the breed and that's what makes them beautiful.
I have a spoiled little Lhasa Apso and need to know what to buy him for christmas.
Answer:I am the exact same! I always buy my dogs alot for Christmas and whoever is the CRAPPY BUTT-HEAD DOG OWNER who answered first saying a "new owner" is retarded!! I feel so sorry for his/her dog(s)! They must feel terrible living with him/her. Sweetie, get your dog some cute holiday toys, gourmet dog treats, and some cute doggy clothes! Merry (early) Christmas!
Hi, I got a 8 year old Lhasa Apso named Cococa and for a long time he been itching and digging himself. He don't have many or none fleas on him but he still does it. My vet says its allergies but I don't know anybody got a Lhasa Apso dog at all that has this problem. I'm open to any ideas or suggestions at all. Hi, I put flea stuff on him too each month. Hi, I took him to the vet before and they never did give me anything for him itching and digging at all.
Answer:I have a 7 year old Lhasa with the same problem (Comet). The vet also diagnosed it as flea allergies. She can have just one flea on her and she chew herself up. She's leaves big sores on her back end as a result and I feel so sorry for her. Advantage/Frontline have not provided me with the results I want so I have resorted to bathing her 2-3 times daily with just plain Dawn dishsoap and then following up with a moisturizing conditioner. I towel dry her as opposed to using the dryer which seems to be more drying and then follow with a flea spray (Adam's works well). Also, I give her half of a benydryl when itching becomes unbearable. It makes her drowsy so I don't like to do it often, but it does help with the scratching/chewing. Please let me know if you find any other good suggestions.
A Lhasa Apso is a type of dog. Looking to train in all areas.
Answer:The Lhasa Apso is a lovely little breed PROVIDING you make it clear from the word go that you are the boss. Some of these little dogs (I groom lots of them) can be stubborn and quite nasty. This is because they are let away with being naughty when they are puppies and as they grow older it develops into full blown aggression which is not good because it means you'll have a mountain to climb. For starters there's trying to find a groomer that will de-matt a lhasa apso that behaves like a possessed lawnmower. A good trick is to always play with your dogs feet as these are problem areas at the groomers and you will have one happy dog and groomer if the job can be done without your dog jumping around like a lunatic. Also get your puppy used to objects like combs being in at its face and eyebrows. This will help a lot in acquainting him with something he MUST have done regularly for the span of his life. If you don't discipline your dog properly when he is young he will grow up to be aggressive and just not a pleasure to own. So establish this firm but fair authority from puppyhood. If he is naughty, correct him. For example if he bites, (this sounds cruel but isn't) give him a firm shake or two by the scruff of the neck. This is a psychological flash back to what his mother would have done, her control over her pups is carrying and moving them by the scruff of the neck. This will establish your place as the leader, the boss. Just make sure the shake is once or twice and not over zealous or cruel. In grooming this is an effective way of calming dogs that are taking the mickey and being naughty or aggressive, because the last thing we want is for a dog to bite the scissors and give itself a nasty injury, or injure us. Biting is not to be confused with play biting, however. Play biting does not hurt, but when a real aggressive bite is given you will know about it - it is PAINFUL!! Lhasas especially have a painful bite and proper training will ensure that this situation is avoided. So just remember to establish that you are the boss and don't be afraid to discipline him just because he is small and cute. Don't ever hit him or be cruel, discipline is achieved in more civilised ways. Good Luck!
